Loyal. Beautiful. Professional. Impeccably organized. Potentially lethal. Sarah Stevens is a woman with many distinct qualities. First and foremost a butler par excellence, skilled at running large households smoothly and efficiently, she is also a trained bodyguard and expert marksman - indispensable to her elderly employer, a courtly gentleman whom Sarah has come to respect and love. Then one night she thwarts a burglary in progress, a courageous act that awards Sarah her requisite "fifteen minutes of fame" with the local press. But the exposure is enough to catch the attention of a tortured soul who, unbeknownst to Sarah, will stop at nothing to have her for himself. Sarah's perfectly ordered life is shattered when tragedy strikes: her beloved employer is brutally murdered. The detective investigating the case assures Sarah that she is not a suspect. Until lightning strikes twice. There's a second killing - and this time, despite a lack of evidence connecting her to the crime, Sarah cannot escape the shadow of guilt. The only option left for Sarah is to carry on with her life. But she doesn't realize that a deranged stalker is luring her into an elaborate trap...one in which she, once ensnared, might never escape. For Sarah soon finds herself at the mercy of a man who will tend to her every whim, smother her with affection, and crush her in his all-consuming embrace.

Why do dogs speak so profoundly to our inner lives? When Mark Doty decides to adopt a dog as a companion for his dying partner, he finds himself bringing home Beau, a large golden retriever, malnourished and in need of loving care. Beau joins Arden, the black retriever, to complete their family. As Beau bounds back into life, the two dogs become Mark Doty's intimate companions, his solace, and eventually the very life force that keeps him from abandoning all hope during the darkest days. Their tenacity, loyalty, and love inspire him when all else fails.
Dog Years is a remarkable book: a moving and intimate memoir interwoven with profound reflections on our feelings for animals and the lessons they teach us about life, love, and loss. Mark Doty writes about the heart-wrenching vulnerability of dogs, the positive energy and joy they bring, and the gift they bear us of unconditional love. A book unlike any other, Mark Doty's surprising meditation is radiantly unsentimental yet profoundly affecting. Beautifully written, Dog Years is a classic in the making.

An Innocent at Polebrook: A Memoir of an 8Th Air Force Bombardier
This is a true story about aninnocent 18-year old plucked from his small hometown in California who foundhimself at 19 riding in the nose of a heavy bomber under conditions he couldnot possibly have imagined. The book explores the excruciating tension betweenhis innocence and the raw reality of war. As a bombardier riding in a Plexiglas compartment, the author had a unique vantage point from which he could behold grand vistas. He witnessed the beauty of clouds and the highaltitude sky, the ever-changing scene below of sea, mountains, rivers and towns. But he also observed armadas of bombers stretching out ahead like flocksof geese, the horrifying barrages of black antiaircraft fire, the menace ofenemy interceptors and the heartbreaking spectacle of wounded bombers. This book follows the everyday activities of a bombardier in the 8th Air Force during World War II. There are no heroics in this account other than thecourage of men who performed their jobs despite withering enemy opposition andthe ever-present specter of sudden death. It is a collage of agonizingapprehensions, numbing fright, occasional pride, bitter disappointments, abjectloneliness, fits of anger and even good times. The author wrote the book in 1st person, present tense so that, in a sense, the reader could ride with him inthe glassed-in nose of a B-17. He bolstered his recollections of each missionwith raw facts gleaned from tattered and yellowing mission reports that are filed in neat folders in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and from numerous letters sent to andkept by his parents.

A blinding toothache sends Hamish Macbeth 120 miles out of Lochdubh to the dentist Frederick Gilchrist, only to find him dead. Since everyone is pleased the dentist is deceased--patients, several harassed women, and even his wife--Macbeth faces one of the more biting challenges of his career. In this addition to Beaton's series featuring unassuming Scottish policeman Hamish Macbeth, Hamish finds himself precipitated by a vicious toothacheinto the world of Dr. Frederick Gilchrist.Gilchrist is a local dentist bestknown for his eagerness to replace healthy teeth with inexpensive dentures, and infamous for his hard hand on the drill. Maggie Bane, his lovelyassistant with a harsh and unlovely voice, surprises Hamish with herhostility, but he is even more astonished to find the dentist's dead bodyreclining in his chair with mysterious drill marks on his teeth.
Delving deeper into the village's rural dish in search of the murderer, Macbeth uncovers long-buried relationships, an illicit local still, arobbery that is not what it appears, and the expected deceptions andpartial truths his countrymen tell the police for reasons only a localcharacter like Hamish can understand. Once again, he has occasion tocontact his former love, the adamantine Priscilla Halburton-Smyth, and herfriend, Sarah Hudson, even helps Hamish hack into police records for hisinvestigation.
Macbeth's efforts bustle charmingly along against the background of quirkyScots dialect and rustic pubs. And Beaton's tangled web of a mystery istidily resolved to the satisfaction of the locals and, surely, for all thedevoted fans of this winning series. --Barbara Schlieper
