if geishas arnt prostitues why does the movie memoirs of a geisha portray them to be?

I was watching the movie "memoirs of a geisha" the other day and i noticed that the portray them as prostitutes, especially in one part of the movie where the men put bets on a young girls virginty. Traditionaly, as far as i know, they are only supposed to be entertainers and never to sleep with clients. so im a little connfuesed.
