Why do we place so much value on weddings?

Why do people spend thousands and thousands of dollars on weddings?

As of February 2009, people spend an average of 852 on weddings.

Does the idea of debt just not cross their minds when they do this? Or do they not mind going into debt if it's for a wedding?

Throw some ideas at me people.
